Nor once more can there be anybody who adore or pursues or really wants to acquire aches of alone, because it’s serious pain, but because from time to time circumstances occur in which toil and discomfort can procure him some good satisfaction

“But i need to teach you exactly how all this mistaken concept of denouncing delight and praising discomfort was given birth to and I also will give you a complete account associated with system, and expound the particular instruction associated with great explorer regarding the reality, the master-builder of person glee. No body denies, dislikes, or prevents pleasures alone, because it’s satisfaction, but because people who do not know just how to pursue enjoyment rationally encounter consequences being extremely unpleasant. To take a trivial instance, which of us actually ever undertakes mind-numbing physical activity, except to get some benefit from this? But who has got any to pick failing with a person which decides to take pleasure from a pleasure which has had no annoying consequences, or person who prevents a pain that produces no resulting enjoyment?”

1914 translation by H. Rackham

“however, we denounce with righteous indignation and dislike people who will be therefore beguiled and demoralized of the appeal of pleasure of-the-moment, thus dazzled by desire, they cannot foresee the pain and problem that are sure to ensue; and equal blame is assigned to those that fail within their task through weakness of will most likely, which is the same as stating through shrinking from toil and discomfort. These circumstances were perfectly simple and easy to distinguish. In a no cost hour, when our energy preference are untrammelled once nothing hinders our having the ability to perform whatever you fancy greatest, every delight is going to be welcomed and every serious pain averted. But in specific circumstances and owing to the reports of responsibility or even the responsibilities of businesses it will probably frequently take place that pleasures have to be repudiated and annoyances approved. The smart man for that reason always keeps within these issues to the idea of option: the guy denies delights to lock in other better joy, otherwise the guy endures discomforts in order to avoid worse pains.”
